What’s new?

(Untitled painting on the Abortion bans in the US/ America post-Roe v. Wade)

Recently I had the opportunity to present my new project not only at Illustration 57 but also at my end of semester assessment day, which gave me time to see how to display the painting, the public reaction, try out a different way of displaying it the second time and the public reaction once more. This is how I presented it the second time and how I will exhibit it next time I have an opportunity to. I feel like the upside down flag gives the social/political context that is so important in this project but maybe didn’t completely shine through the painting. The painting depicts this tragedy in a raw way but it doesn’t translate the need for change and the feeling of protest within this project that is in the essay. There was much more need for the full 6 page essay to always follow this painting if it weren’t for the upside down flag, and like this I think that it will have a greater impact. I like how I figured this out by trying out these different ways of presenting and the public interaction with the piece during both exhibits.

The catalogue with the research essay on the project, sources and visual essay can be found on the Illustration 57 page, and further in the link for the pdf.

If you click here you can find the pdf for just the essay.
